The Unburdening: Set Down, Rise Together
A project of The Open CornerFor men

THE UNBURDENING

Set down · Rise together

Built for men. Led by men. Held by men who understand the weight.

A confidential circle built exclusively for men to lay down what they carry: stress, grief, pressure, silence. And rise lighter, in the company of other men who understand.

The Unburdening is a project of The Open Corner, one of several programmes we are building for the community.

Most men are taught to carry everything and set down nothing.

The Unburdening exists to interrupt that. It is a circle for men to speak plainly about what they are carrying: work, marriage, fatherhood, grief, money, identity, shame. Without performance, and without being fixed.

No therapist. No hierarchy. No audience. Just men, a structure that keeps the space safe, and the relief of being known.

How a session unfolds

Every gathering follows the same four movements, so the ground always feels steady. Times shown are West Africa Time — see Upcoming editions above for exact dates.

5:00 – 5:10 pmI. Opening

The Grounding

A short check-in and shared agreement to the Agreements. We arrive, and we name where we are really at, in one word or one sentence.

5:10 – 6:00 pmII. Unloading

The Circle

Each man who wants the floor takes it, uninterrupted. No advice, no fixing, only witnessing. What is spoken here stays here.

6:00 – 6:15 pmIII. Reflecting

The Mirror

Brief, invited reflection. Men name what they heard in themselves, not what they think another man should do.

6:15 – 6:30 pmIV. Closing

The Send-Off

One thing each man is taking with him, and one thing he is leaving behind in the room. Then we close, deliberately.

The Agreements

Six agreements that keep the room safe. Every man affirms these before he joins the circle, and they are read aloud at the start of every session.

I

Confidentiality

What is shared in the circle does not leave the circle. No names, no stories, no screenshots, anywhere else.

II

No Fixing

You are not here to solve another man's life. You are here to witness it.

III

Own Your Voice

Speak from “I,” not “you.” This is your experience, not a lecture.

IV

No Judgment

Whatever is said stays free of ridicule, correction, or moral verdict.

V

Presence Over Performance

You do not need the right words. You need to be honest.

VI

Show Up

Cameras on when able. Full attention. This room only works if you are actually in it.

Who this is for

The Unburdening is open to any man ready to be honest in front of other men.

The Silently Overwhelmed

Carrying work, family and financial pressure with no outlet, and no one who has asked how he is really doing.

The Newly Shaken

Navigating a divorce, a loss, a diagnosis, a layoff. Anything that cracked the floor open recently.

The Quietly Curious

Not in crisis. Just aware that he has never had a space like this, and wants to try it before he needs it.

Strength is not carrying it alone.Strength is learning where to set it down.
THE UNBURDENING

Frequently asked

Is this therapy?

No. The Unburdening is a peer support circle, not a clinical service. It is structured, confidential and facilitated, but it does not replace therapy or medical care. If you are in crisis, see our Support page for help you can reach right now.

Do I have to share?

No. You can attend and simply listen. Many men find the first session easier spent absorbing the room before they speak.

Will I know anyone else there?

Maybe, maybe not. Either way, the Agreements apply to everyone equally. What is said in the room stays in the room, regardless of who is in it.

Is it recorded?

Never. Sessions are not recorded, screenshotted or transcribed, in keeping with the Agreements.

Where is it held?

The Unburdening is held online via Google Meet, so you can join from anywhere. The link and details are sent after you register.

Is it free?

Yes. The Unburdening is free to attend.

How do I join?

Register on the Register page. You will receive the Agreements, the session link and a short note on what to expect before your first circle.

The next circle is forming.

Seats are limited to keep the room honest. Register, and come as you are.
